Posture, ribs, head and pelvis!

I think these 3 words started probably when I turned 12!

“Stand up straight.”

But what did that mean?  I just started to pull my chest forward so it looked like I was taller, and then my head came along for the ride, and the migraines followed.  I then had children and used a lot of my right hip and a lot of my back.  Then I thought I would run a marathon🥹

Flash forward to 3 knee surgeries and 3 herniated discs in my back.

Even with my pilates and yoga, I struggled.  I really found progress when I found PRI about 6 years ago,  PRI is a strange type of PT but was extremely helpful in teaching me where my ribs were resting on my body, and then my head and my hips had to find the right space.

Thus, If you’ve taken my classes, you know why I talk about our ribs so much!

I see a lot of women who were told the same thing as me.  “Stand up Straight,” and their ribs are thrust forward, and their back hurts because they are unaware this is happening in their bodies.

If our bones are out of placement, then our muscles and ligaments do a lot more work to try to keep them in their proper place.

After taking Katie Bowman's class last weekend, I could take what I learned from PRI and Nutritious Movement and continue to work on my posture skills and where my bones are stacked.

If interested, head to this article by Katie that gives some great counsel on rib thrusting.

I’m very grateful that I found modalities that helped me find where my bones should be in space. When my back feels a tweak, my knees feel tight,  and my hips feel tight, I have the tools to help and I can then take this knowledge to any type of workout.

Trust me, it is still a work in progress, but the knowledge is so powerful to help us age without pain and injury!
