Striking Thoughts on Yoga, Pilates and breath
“The individual is of first importance,
not the system.
Remember that man created method and not that method created man,
and do not strain yourself in twisting into someone’s preconceived pattern,
which unquestionably would be appropriate for him, but not necessarily for you.”
- Bruce Lee, Striking Thoughts
This quote hit me like a ton of bricks!
Yes! Bruce Lee! Yes!
Instagram is an awesome place to see photos of crazy poses in yoga, and beautiful core work in pilates, and people telling you to breath a certain way. But even before instagram arrived, I strongly believed we needed to bring our bodies to yoga, pilates and breath, not have the "system" tell us what a pose or exercise or breath should look or feel like.
Who is to say why your body should move like someone else's?
Are you living the same life?
Do you have the same job?
Where you given the same bones and muscles as them?
Are you dealing with the same stressors?
There are so many reasons why you will not look like the person next to you on the mat.
I've worked really hard on my yoga poses, my pilates exercises and my breath work. I may never be able to get my hips to move a certain way, my pilates hip circles to look a certain way, and maybe today my breath will only be where it is in this moment, on this day. I will keep practicing, not for perfection, but to feel good and strong in my body and mind.
There are so many ways to bring YOUR body to yoga, pilates and breath work.
Let's just do it.
Bring yourself to class, be proud of yourself for showing up, find joy in motivating yourself to move and breath.
Life is short,
Let's try all the ways to breath, let's try different shapes,
let's live without worrying about not being able to touch your toes!
You are of the first importance, let's twist into your pattern!
"A teacher is never a giver of truth—he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself. A good teacher is merely a catalyst."—Bruce Lee
I'd love to help you move the way your body needs to move in the moment and be your catalyst.
