Seeing Spring with new eyes

I'm gliding downhill,

The wind is four miles an hour (in Door County, that doesn't happen often.)

I look to the right, and a woman is raking her yard. She looks up at the four people riding their bikes on this blue-sky, light-wind day.

I wave, and she waves back.

Riding next to me is a gentleman I have just met, and he said, “Wow, what a beautiful sight! What a beautiful moment! We are so blessed.”

This man then told me how he almost died about seven years ago and then again in 2024. He now can't hear from the infection, but what he sees and what he is able to experience every day is with wide eyes and a full heart.

I used to think fall was my favorite time of year, but in the last few years, I've come to see spring as perhaps my new favorite season.

The opportunity to watch the trees blossom, and the daffodils and tulips erupt from the earth, gives me the opportunity to see things anew, to have hope for the earth, to begin again. I get to start my garden and know that by fall, I will have a bountiful feast.

This is the time of year when I have the urge to start running. I get excited about getting on my bike that has been stored for the last five months.

I often curse the sun for waking me before 6:30, but it's just doing what it does best. Allowing me to see the morning in all its quiet and beauty.

As Earth Day passes, spring is a reminder to start anew, to blossom with new challenges, and to open our eyes wide and see the beauty in every moment of our day.
