“Be brave enough to be bad at something new”

I'm home from some fun new activities! I would love to say rest and relaxation, but we hit the ground running in Canmore/Banff, Canada, and didn't stop.

I'm sure you probably figured, but I'm not much of a sit at the beach and read a book kind of gal. I'm definitely a person who loves finding new adventures, and if I find something that challenges my brain and body, I'm all for it. This trip, the new adventure was fly fishing.

We cast and mended for 8 hours, and we had not much to show for all our casting and mending, except for some nibbles. My 3 friends and I couldn't figure out how to pull the fish out of the water.

About hour 5, I thought I had a nibble, but I actually hooked the cheek of the most amazing guide ever! I laugh when I get nervous and went full belly/scared omg I'm going to be scarred forever laugh. She told me it happens a lot (I don't really believe her!)

Luckily, I brought a first-aid kit because hers was hard to reach. But it took me a bit to cast again.

Finally, at ten minutes before our adventure was about to end, I hooked a real fish!  I think this is like golf holes 9 and 18; you do so well, you are ready to give it another try!

The next day, we hopped on the plane, and I was energized from a great trip with amazing friends. I asked a friend for one of his Dove candies, and about ½ way through the flight, I opened it, and this is what it read:

“Be brave enough to be bad at something new”

I chuckled as I realized that I was pretty bad at fly fishing, but also realized I was brave enough to try it out, and boy, did I get some good relaxing time on the water with the breeze, laughter, sunshine, and a new appreciation for how hard fishing can be.

We are now halfway through summer, and I'm wondering:

Have you found something new to be brave enough to be bad at?

Are you thinking of trying something new but are afraid?

Can you find a friend like I did to push you forward?

Casting and mending helped me be brave with a lot of quality quiet time.
