Keeping an open mind and heart.

On Being Stubborn:

Having or showing dogged determination not to change one's attitude or position on something, especially in spite of good arguments or reasons to do so.

I remember being stubborn in junior high & high school and then in college I realized being stubborn wasn’t as helpful as it was when I lived with my parents! This past month I encountered individuals who show a very dogged determination not to change their position on something, so I began to look at my choices.

I love to learn new things and so decided to take a few classes this spring.  Some for personal development and some for work. I decided in all these classes I was going to keep my mind open about learning about myself and new ideas to bring to you and that it’s ok if I need to change my attitude or position on something.

This week I was able to visit an older family member and was amazed by her stubbornness as it related to her aging.  I was so saddened to see her in a place where fear had taken hold, and she became stubborn in her views of aging how “she felt she should.”

I don’t know what I will be like as I age, but I made a promise myself (and my kids) to keep learning and taking classes that challenge me, keep trying new things, (and to get hearing aids when I need them!)  Being stubborn only takes us so far and feels good in the moment, but living with an open heart and mind feels so much better.
